đź’Ą MOVING OUT?
TIPS to avoid surprises and secure your deposit refund!

Each of us, at one time or another, has experienced the stress of handing back an apartment to a landlord. And your friends told you how difficult it can be to refund your depositâť—

We do not know where to start, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re relocating for work, studies, or a fresh start, the key to a ensure a good exit (and getting your deposit back) is all based on careful planning.

Here we go: 10 things to do before leaving your apartment 👇

  1. Give Proper Notice

This might vary from country to country but check your lease agreement for the required notice period. This period is typically 30 to 90 days before you want to leave the apartment. Read your agreement and inform your landlord in writing. Keep a dated copy of the notice.

  1. Review Your Lease

Re-read your rental contract to ensure you meet all the move-out conditions. Look for clauses about cleaning, painting, repairs, or penalties.

  1. Schedule a Pre-Inspection

Request a walkthrough before your official move-out. This gives you a chance to fix issues that might otherwise cost you part of your deposit.

  1. Repair Damages

Patch up holes in the wall, replace broken fixtures, and fix anything you are responsible for. Normal wear and tear is okay but neglect is not.

  1. Deep Clean the Apartment

Deep clean everything. Starting on floors, windows, kitchen appliances, bathroom tiles, and closets. Hiring a professional cleaner is a good investment if time is tight.

  1. Take Photos

When you arrive take pictures of the condition of the apartment, and don’t forget before leaving, take clear photos of each room as proof of the apartment’s condition. This can protect you in case of disputes.

  1. Cancel or Transfer Utilities

Inform your electricity, internet, gas, and water providers of your move. How in advance you should do them will depend on the contacts with each service company. Arrange final meter readings and keep the receipts.

  1. Change Your Address

Redirect your mail with La Poste and update your address with banks, schools, employers, and government agencies.

  1. Remove All Personal Items

Don’t leave anything behind, even if it seems useful. Landlords may charge for removal or deduct from your deposit.

  1. Return the Keys

Hand over all keys (and access badges, garage openers, etc.) on the agreed date. Make sure to get written confirmation of the return.
